🌿 Plantain Sucker (Musa spp.)

Plantain suckers are the young offshoots (baby plants) that grow at the base of a mature plantain plant. They are the primary method of propagation in plantain farming.

Types of Plantain Suckers:

Type Description Best For
Sword sucker Long, narrow leaves with a strong base 🌟 Best for planting
Water sucker Broad leaves, weak root system ❌ Avoid for planting
Maiden sucker Intermediate between the two types ✅ Acceptable to use

🔎 Note: Sword suckers are most vigorous and give better yields.

🌱 How to Plant a Plantain Sucker:

  1. Select healthy sword suckers (free of disease and pests).

  2. Trim off leaves and roots.

  3. Dig a hole about 30–60 cm deep and wide.

  4. Place sucker upright and cover with soil.

  5. Water immediately after planting.

📅 Maturity Period:

  • Plantain suckers usually mature and produce fruit within 9–12 months, depending on the variety and care.

🌾 Care Tips:

  • Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

  • Apply organic compost or NPK (e.g., 15:15:15) every 2–3 months.

  • Remove new suckers after 1–2 months to avoid overcrowding (leave only 1–2 per plant for continuity).
